I DIDN’T say a word to Anoki on our trek back to the Beemer or

during our drive across town. I was struggling the whole while to restrain my anger. It infuriated me, of course, to know that LaVelle had been willing to torch my butt to get in good with some punk demon wannabe, but a fair amount of my rage was directed at Anoki.

On the east side of town, close to Saint Mary’s Hospital, Anoki pulled into a Taco Bell drive-through and ordered himself a taco salad, sans the ground beef, cheese, and sour cream. Suddenly, words started flying bitterly from my mouth. “That’s so dumb! Why get a taco salad without the stuff that makes it a damn taco salad? Why not just go to a place that has a frickin’ garden salad if that’s what you want?”

Anoki didn’t even bat an eye at the outburst. Having placed the order, he pulled ahead to the pickup window. The cashier, a plump, smiling woman in her midthirties, announced the total and stuck out her hand for payment. As Anoki dug down in his pocket, the cashier looked at me, shrouded in the darkness of the car’s passenger side. She squinted, puzzled.

“What’s that your friend’s wearing?” the woman asked. “Some kind of costume?”

“You might say that,” Anoki replied, forking over the money. “Hey, that’s really neat.” The woman squinted at me again. “It looks like he’s not all there.”

“Trust me, he isn’t.”

Laughing, the woman slid the window shut.

Now I was mad at the cashier as well. “Is the stupid woman blind or something? What the hell was she talking about?” “The curse camouflages you in shadows to make it easier for you to stalk prey. The blackness of your skin makes you blend into the darkness, and you become almost invisible.” Anoki turned to me. “Now, since your anger obviously has nothing to do with either my dinner or that cashier’s vision, let’s talk about what’s really bothering you.”

“Yeah, all right, let’s do that. That crazy little demon you called up back there is plain evil. He ran off to hurt people, maybe even kill somebody, all for the fun of it. And you just let him go. Not that I’m trying to get out of anything, but you’re gonna chain me up in hell for being a menace to society and—”

“Myron.” He looked into my eyes but didn’t say anything else for several seconds. In that time, the edge came off my boiling emotions. I found myself settling back in my seat.

“Sorry,” I said, giving him a little smile. “I don’t know why I was feeling so upset about everything.” I laughed. If I got any mellower, I’d melt into a warm, gooey puddle on the Beemer’s fine nubuck leather seat.

“I understand your concern, Myron. But you should know that, while Benito is dangerous—as all demons are—he poses no immediate threat to any ordinary person here in town. He is a demon who revels in pain—”

“Is he the one you’re gonna feed me to?”

“No.
